A Latin American bamboo,
Chusquea culeou
is a large clumping bamboo with solid canes and a dense branching habit. Most of the commonly grown bamboo species will produce two branches at each node, while this species will sport dozens or even hundreds of branches per node. Because of this, the dark green leaves are incredibly dense and this makes
Chusquea culeou
one of the best plants for a hedge.
This species also tolerates more sun than most other clumping bamboos, particularly more so than the more common
Fargesia
bamboos which normally need a half day of shade. Although
Chusquea culeou
prefers partial shade here in the Rogue Valley where summer temperatures are commonly above 100 degrees, it can still be grown in full sun when watered and fertilized well and given a thick layer of mulch. However, it is still not heat tolerant enough to plant on the south side of a building which reflects the heat. Mainly, we have found that this plant has a bigger issue with warm roots, so keeping the ground cool is the most important aspect to success. We also recommend planting these bamboo plants in the ground as soon as possible after receiving them.
It appears that
C. culeou
does not grow well when the roots remain wet during the winter, so sand should be added below the plant when it is being put in the ground.
Especially when mulched and fertilized regularly,
C. culeou
grows extremely fast and quickly forms a hedge or small grove. Usually, plants are upright at the base and fan out at the top.
C. culeou
has an extremely variable habit; depending on the location of the plant, it can either be upright or weeping. Plants will generally reach a height of twenty feet but under ideal conditions can grow even higher.
Chusquea culeou
is most useful for the cut canes. Unlike most Asian species,
C. culeou
has
solid
1.5 inch thick culms, adding strength without limiting flexibility.
Chusquea culeou
also produces more canes than a running bamboo in the same space, making it a great choice for cane production.
The lower portions of the canes show the new shoots which have not yet leafed out.
The one gallon plants we have available this winter are ready to take off! These are seedlings of 'Asien II' which has a more upright habit than many other C. culeou varieties.
Numerous new shoots are just starting to produce branches on Chusquea culeou
New shoots will often take on a purple-red color for the summer before turning a light green. These plants are heavier and are shipped separately from bare root plants. Because they are potted they can handle longer transit times so can ship via UPS Ground instead of USPS Air Mail. Potted plants can also be shipped year-round.We regularly top our 1 gallon bamboo plants at 24-30 inches tall throughout the growing season. This results in dense, bushy foliage while allowing for economical shipping. From this size most running species will grow to 5-6 feet tall in the first spring and clumping species will usually grow to 4-5 feet tall. ![]() 1 gallon bamboo plants strapped in and ready to be sealed. Unpacking Bare Root PlantsYou will be sent tracking details as soon as your plants are shipped. Unpack your plants as quickly as possible after they are delivered. We use two types of boxes, side-sealing and top-sealing. For boxes that are taped along the whole length you can cut the tape on either side and remove the plant bundles by cutting the tape holding the bundle to the bottom. For boxes that are sealed on the top and bottom, it is easiet to open the bottom of the box (the shipping label is at the top) and pull the bundle of plants out straight out. Check that the box is empty as there can be a second bundle of plants stuck towards the top.![]() A bundle of trees. What if I am not able to plant right away? You can usually leave the plants in their shipping container unopened for 1-2 days if there were no shipping delays and you have received your plants from late November through February. Plants shipped when it is warmer can't stay in their packages for as long. For longer term storage of plants you can pot them up or plant them in rows close together temporarily and then pull them out later in the spring to be planted again. This keeps the roots moist while allowing for air flow to the tops. The roots should have good contact with the soil to ensure they have access to adequate moisture. |
